Summary For Each Chapter Flashcards
Chapter 1
-set by the salinas river on a Thursday evening.
-George and Lennie are 2 itinerant workers who are on their way to the new ranch they are joining
-Lennie has a mental disability and George cares for him
-the bus driver dropped them 10 miles away from the ranch so they have to camp by a river for one night as it’s too far for them to walk
-George tells Lennie his favourite story that they will own their own farm one day and “live of the fatta lan”
Chapter 2
-the next day Goethe and Lennie arrive at the ranch
-they go to the bunkhouse where they meet candy- (“the old swamper”), Curley, the boss, Curleys wife, Carlson and slim.
-the boss is suspicious that George won’t let Lennie talk for himself
-slims dog had recently had puppy’s and Lennie begs George for one
Chapter 3
-slim realises Lennie has a mental disability and the mentality of a child.
-George tells slim about what happened in weed with Lennie
-Carlson bullies candy into shooting his dog (candys only friend was his dog and it got killed)
-Curleys walks in and sees slim isn’t there and thinks he’s with his wife
-George and Lennie talk about their dream and candy offfers them €350 to join. He says “spose I went in with you guys, that’s €350 I put in”
-Curley returns from looking for his wife and challenges Lennie to a fight. Lennie crushes his hand
Chapter 4
-all the men go to the brothel and leave crooks, candy, Lennie and Curleys wife behind
-crooks taunts Lennie that George may never return and Lennie got worried and annoyed with crooks
-candy joins them and tells crooks ahout their dream even though George told him not to tell anyone.
-crooks wanted to join and says “if u guys want a hand to work for nothing”
-Curleys wife comes in and attacks crooks verbally. She calls him the n-word and says “I could get u strung up on a tree so easily
-all the men return and crooks realises that he doesn’t want to join the dream and that he “wouldn’t want to go to no place like that”
Chapter 5
-Lennie is in the barn stroking his dead puppy.
-Curleys wife comes in and Lennie tries not to talk to her as George won’t let him “tend the rabbits” if he does
-she talks to him about her unhappy marriage, and how lonely she is.
-she tells him about her dream and how she “coulda been in the movies” and “wear the nice dresses they wear”
-she invites Lennie to stroke her hair, as he’s heavy handed he breaks her neck.
-Lennie runs away to where George told him too if anything bad happens
-candy finds her dead body
-all the men coming in and Curley is so angry and wants to get revenge on Lennie from when he crushed his hand
Chapter 6
-George finds Lennie at the river.
-Lennie is pancaking and asks George if hes mad with him.
-George tells Lennie about their dream for the final time
-George “pulled the trigger” and kills Lennie
-the other men burst in and slim says “come on George me and u will go get a drink.
-Carlson questions “what the hell ya suppose is Eatin them two guys?”
