Summaries For Population Flashcards
Ecological succession
The gradual change in the composition of species in a given area (one species replaces another).
Two major factors that effect the numbers of species in a community
The latitude in terrestrial communities
Pollution in aquatic systems
Four aspects of a self sustainable community
- Its persistence
- The ability to resist being altered
- Its constant population
- Its resilience in repairing damage
* high biodiversity
Birth, death, and migration rates
They determine population size.
Ex:
Birth rates increased in developed countries, but the population went up due to immigration
Fertility rates went down, but it is still above above replacement level.
Age structure
Age structure affect population.
Women past primary birth years (15-40)-> low population increase
Women in early primary birth years-> high population increase
Family size & child care
Smaller families are better for the environment
Lack of health care, protection, and care from parents
Country examples
China and India
China- one child policy-> fine for more than one child
India- desire for male children (same for China) and no care for the elderly
Slowing population growth
Investing in family planning
Reducing poverty
Elevating the status of women
