Population Vocbulary Flashcards
Intrinsic rate of increase (r)
The rate at which the population would grow if it had unlimited resources
Environmental Resistance
The combination of all factors that act to limit the growth of a population
Logistic growth
Involves rapid growth followed by a steady decrease in population growth until the population size levels off
Population density
Is the number of individuals in a population found in a particular area or volume.
Population dynamics
The study or how factors such as distribution, numbers, age structure, and density change in response in environmental conditions.
R-selected species
A species that reproduces early in life with a high reproductive rate with a short life span.
R- roach- cockroach- insect- r selected
K-selected species
Species that tend to reproduce later in life with a small number of offspring and longer life span
Resilience
The ability of a living system to be restored through secondary succession after moderate disturbance.
Resource partitioning
When species are competing for similar scarce resources evolve specialized traits that allow them to use shared resources at different times, ways, or places.
Tipping point
Limits to the stresses the ecosystems and the global systems such as the climate can take. Additional stress can cause in abrupt and usually irreversible way that often involves collapse.
