Q
how do your write about artworks using structural frame?
A
- Underline keywords in the question, so you are clear on what it is asking and to make sure you answer the question. It is also good practice to repeat keywords from the question in your answer. Underline: TASK WORDS that tell you what to do in the question (i.e. identify, describe, discuss, how) CONTENT WORDS that tell you what the topic is and LIMITING WORDS that tell you what part of the topic to focus on. For example:
DESCRIBE the artist’s use of LINE TECHNIQUES IN THE ARTWORK and EXPLAIN what it tells us about THE SUBJECT’S CHARACTER. - Look at the artwork closely and make short notes around it. For example, what can you see? Who do you think this man is? What type of shapes can you see and where? What do the lines tell us about his character? Have you used these techniques & media in class? This will help you organise your thoughts so that you can build on them in your answer. If you aren’t sure, look for clues in the citation or label underneath.

how do you write about artworks using subjectie frames?
A
- Underline key content in the words, so you are clear on what it is asking and to make sure you answer the question. It is also good practice to repeat keywords from the question in your answer. For examples: “Explain how Picasso creates EMOTION in the artwork below.”
- Before you start writing answer, look at the artwork closely. What can you see? How does it make you feel? What elements of art do you notice? Read the caption carefully for clues about the artwork’s meaning. You may also wish to make some quick notes around the artwork to help organise your thoughts
- Back up every statement you write with a visual example from the artwork (POINT>EXAMPLE). E.G:
Point: Picasso has created an emotion of fear in his artwork, The Weeping Woman
Example: This is shown through the figure’s facial expression and body language, as she is screaming and terror with her hands clutching her face
