- Events and issues: What important events and/or issues may have inspired the artwork? Consider technology, politics, gender and class
- Culture: Does the artist express ideas about their culture, race, nationality or religion?
- Values: What is the artist trying to say about the time/place in which the work was created? is the work communicating a belief, attitude or opinion?
