Suksmasarira- Subtle Body + Practices Flashcards
1) List the names of the three main Nãdī and their location within the physical body.
Ida- is connected to the left nostril- crosses at the eyebrow centre and dominates the right side of the brain.
Pingala- is connected to the right nostril. Pingala network of Nadis and crosses at the eyebrow centre and dominates the left side of the brain
Susumna Nadi- The Susumna Nadi is the main, central energy channel of the subtle body. This is situated through the centre of the spinal cord.
When both nostrils flow together, the main channel known as the Susumna Nadi is stimulated. They connect at special points of intensity called chakras. When these nadis flow freely we experience vitality and health. When the nadis becomes stagnant it becomes congested and as a result we struggle with poor mental and physical health.
What is the relationship between the Nadi and the nervous system?
Nadis circulate prana through the body.
Nadis determine nature and quality of nervous system
An extensive network of nerves and plexus covering the entire physical body.
A healthy nervous system = vitality and rejuvenation.
Name the seven chakras in their sequential order and their corresponding colours.
Crown Chakra- Sahasrara- White Third Eye Chakra- Ajna- Purple Throat Chakra- Vishudda- light blue Heart Chakra- Anahata- Green Solar Plexus Chakra- Manipura- Yellow Sacral Chakra- Svadhisthana- Orange Root Chakra- Muladhara- Red
4) List the five major Vãyu, their location and the function of each.
Prana Vayu- down flow of energy- heart and lungs- circulation of systemic blood, filtration, and the pulse
Apana Vayu- downward flow of energy- is located above the navel - its major function is elimination of waste through the small and large intestines + the urogenital system
Udana Vayu - is upward flow of energy- it is located in the chest and throat area-
- major function is for producing sounds through the vocal apparatus as in speaking, singing, laughing and crying.
it represents the conscious energy required to produce the vocal sounds of corresponding to the intent of the being
-It is responsible for sound, communication, sight, hearing, sleep hormones, muscle function, tissue repair, thyroid function and hormone production of the pineal and pituitary glands
Samana Vayu- location is seated in the navel- The movement of air is circular.
- Major function: responsible for the process of digestion and cell metabolism…also includes the heat regulating processes of the body.
Vyana- located at the heart centre- Vyana is outward moving air.
Major function- the expansion and contraction processes of the body, e.g., voluntary muscular system…Vyana supports the circulatory system, lymphatic and immune system, the nervous system + muscular skeletal system.
Samana Vayu
Seated in Naval, abdomen
Digestion, cell metabolism
culmination of Prana + Apana Vayu
Supported by Uddiyana Bandha Kriya, Kapalabhati + Bhastrika
Auras are a projection of this Vayu
Vyana Vayu
Seated in musculoskeletal system
Supports: Circulatory Lymphatic Immune Nervous Musculoskeletal
When all vayu in balance > Vyana is in balance
All postures support this wind of energy
Udana Vayu
Seated in throat carried to head
Produces sound- laughing, crying, singing, vocal
Senses:
Sound, communication, sight, hearing
Sleep, hormone, muscle function, tissue repair, thyroid, hormones of pituitary + pineal glands
Apana Vayu
Seated in pelvis + lower limbs
Elimination of waste through excretory systems: lungs, intestines, urogenital.
Exhale= grounded, present, earthed
Downward, outward movement
Prana Vayu
Seated in bottom of heart + throat
Breath provides air to lungs + heart= power + energy
Regulates: circulation, systemic blood flow, filtration + pulse
Inhalation= Lightness
Endurance + resilience in asana
