Childhood sweetheart. His wife died of suspicious circumstances and they couldn’t marry.

Elizabeth liked him a lot. The French were unpopular due to the 1572 massacre of Catholics.

Popular choice but Sweden was a very poor country.
What did her refusal to marry Philip II do?
It caused relationships with Spain to slide.
What did Elizabeth contract in 1562 and what did this cause?
Smallpox. Everyone thought she would die and leave a power void which could lead to civil war.
Why did parliament pressure her in 1566?
To get married. She responded by dismissing them.
