What is suicide ?
intentional act of killing oneself by any means
What is suicidal ideation ?
thinking about killing oneself
What is completed suicide ?
suicide successfully resulting in death
What is nonsuicidal self-injury ?
self-injury directed to the surface of the body to induce relief from a negative feeling/cognitive state or to achieve a positive mood state
What are some risk factors for suicide ?
- psychiatric disorders
- alcohol or substance use disorders
- male gender
- increase age
- race (85 to 90% white people)
- religion (roman catholics at much less risk)
- marriage/divorce
- profession (medical physicians)
- physical health (chronic conditions)
What is the suicide behavior disorder criteria ?
- attempt within last 24 months
- attempt was not initiated in delirium or confusion
- attempt was not undertaken for a religious or political objective
What is anger ?
an emotional response to frustration of desires, threat to one’s need (emotional or physical), or a challenge
What is aggression ?
action or behavior that results in verbal or physical attack
What are some de-escalation techniques ?
- use of short sentences and a calm voice
- maintain physical space
- encourage accountability and self-control
- remain honest
- avoid arguing and use empathy
- maintain pt dignity and self-esteem
- invest time
What does seclusion mean ?
involuntary confinement alone in a room that the patient is physically prevented from leaving
What are restraints ?
any manual method, physical or mechanical device, material, or equipment that restricts freedom of movement
What are the indications for use of restraints ?
- protect pt from self-harm
- prevent pt from assaulting others
