Sugars Flashcards
Monosaccharide Definition
The monomers of carbohydrates.
Disaccharide Definition
Two monosaccharides joined together by a glycosidic bond.
Polysaccharide Definition
Many monosaccharides joined by a glycosidic bond.
4 examples of monosaccharides
Alpha glucose, Beta glucose, Fructose, Galactose.
Monosaccharides in the disaccharide maltose:
2X alpha glucose
Monosaccharides in the disaccharide sucrose:
Alpha glucose + fructose
Monosaccharides in the disaccharide lactose:
Alpha glucose + galactose
Alpha glucose ( diagram )
Beta glucose ( diagram )
Formation of a disaccharide + diagram
Two monosaccharides joined in a condensation reaction. Glycosidic bond created between. Formation of water.
Testing for reducing sugars:
- add benedict’s reagent
- boil in a water bath
- blue -> brick red precipitate is a positive result
Testing for a non - reducing sugar:
- initially test for reducing sugar but if sample remains blue then discard
- with a new sample add dilute hydrochloric acid ( HCl )
- neutralise with an alkali ( sodium hydrogen carbonate )
- carry out steps for testing for a reducing sugar
- blue -> brick red precipitate is a positive result
Examples of reducing sugars:
- all of the monosaccharides
- maltose
- lactose
Examples of a non reducing sugar:
sucrose
How to determine the concentration of the reducing sugar?
Compare to a colour standard chart.
