What was the Sugar Act?
Had the main goal of ending the smuggling trade in sugar and molasses
What was the Currency Act?
Only British currency (money) could be used in the colonies
Why did the Currency Act result in grievances from the colonists?
There was a shortage in British currency because the colonists had used their own paper money
What was the colonists slogan about the taxings?
“Taxation without representation”
What did the slogan “taxation without representation” mean?
Meant colonists didn’t have participation in parliament, so they had no one from the colonies to have a say about the taxes
What was the Stamp Act?
All printed material had to have a government stamp which could only be paid with gold and silver
Why did the Stamp Act enrage the colonists?
Gold and silver was rare in the colonies and land or property was taken if sales were conducted without stamp
How did the colonists protest against the Stamp Acts?
Protesting skulls were created, black skulls to represent the death of free press
How did the colonists fight back against all the acts?
Colonists protested, ignored tax, rioted against tax collectors, and boycotted
Who were the Sons of Liberty?
a famous group founded to advance the rights of the colonists and to fight taxation by the British government
What is tarring and feathering?
Painful public torture to enforce unofficial justice or revenge
