Definition of Sufism
A
Sufis/Tasawwuf are the mystics of Islam. They seek an intimate and spiritual understanding of Allah. All Muslims believe that they will experience such a close relationship in the afterlife, but Sufis believe it is possible during their earthly life.

Origin
A
- Term came from Arabic root word for ‘wool’ - refers to the white woollen robes worn by Muslim wandering Holy Men
- Is the mystical branch of Islam
- Began nearly 100 years after death of Muhammad
- Sunni and Shi’a Muslims can be drawn to it
- An attractive doctrine of love - also attracts many non-Muslims
- Some believe that its doctrine is so universal that one does not have to be Muslim to be Sufi

- Guides the students of ‘dervish’ towards the ‘ecstatic state’ where they can have an intense spiritual relationship with Allah while on earth

A
Getting rid of selfish desires and ego

Zawiyahs
A
Place of spiritual learning and concentration and where Sufis meditate and remember God

A
- Connected people with Allah on a more emotional, spiritual level
- Took some of the emphasis off the legalistic aspect and drected them more to the idea of love of Allah
- Legacy remains of Art, Music, Literature and Poetry.
- Appeals to more
- Invites questions - could be seen as a challenge to Islamic Umma
- Extended to western world
- Practices Islam according to the 5pillars
