Q

What was the difference between these two groups?

A

The Suffragists were members of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) and were lead by Millicent Garrett Fawcett. They campaigned for votes for middle-class, property-owning women and believed in peaceful protest.

The Suffragettes were lead by Emmeline Pankhurst - a former member of the NUWUSS. She broke of because she didn’t think the group was achieving anything. Therefore she made a new group called the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) or the Suffragettes. The Suffragettes knew they needed media attention to get what they wanted, creating a motto ‘Deeds Not Words‘. As they became more aggressive, people started to listen. Their tactics included: breaking windows, planting bombs, handcuffing themselves to railings and going on hunger strikes.
