Immigration Flashcards
Why did Britain need Commonwealth citizens outside of England to come and work for them?
This was a post war economy, and cheap labour was very much appreciated. The people from these countries, like Jamaica, were happy to work for low wages.
Why were the immigrants happy with the low paying jobs?
This was because back in their countries, there weren’t many jobs and living conditions were not up to standard. In Jamaica for example, the sugar trade was damaged from a hurricane that swept the country. This meant they were willing to work for any money at all.
What was the most famous arrival of Jamaican and Trinidad people made on to Britain?
The ship named the “Empire Windrush”.
Where did these immigrants work?
In areas of great labour shortage, such as on buses and in hospitals.
Where did these immigrants live?
They settled in areas of cheaper housing in cities such as London and Birmingham., as they could not afford better living. They were often racially discriminated.
What happened when the UK economy boomed in the late 50s and 60s?
Many immigrants from India, East and West Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Cyprus and many other Commonwealth countries came to England to work in the textile factories of the North of England and the engineering factories of the Midlands. Due to this, Britain’s cities became increasingly multicultural.the textile factories of the North of England and the engineering factories of the Midlands.
