SCUMBIE
Deaths that need to be reported
Suicide
Causes unknown or no doctors certificate issued
Unnatural or violent death
Medical, surgical or dental operation/procedure
Birth deaths or deaths because of pregnancy or giving birth
Institutional deaths
Enactment requires the holding of an inquest
Post mortems
Is an examination of a persons body to determine the cause of death. A post mortem is authorised by the coroner who directs a pathologist to perform the examination
Inquest that must be held
The coroner must hold an inquiry into (SIC)
Suicide
Institutional deaths
Cause or circumstances where the coroner is not satisfied that cause/circumstances has been clearly established.
1st purpose
What established
- The fact the person has died
- The identity of the deceased
- The cause of death
- Where and when the death occurred
- The circumstances of the death
2nd purpose
To make recommendations or comments that in the coroners opinion may, if drawn to the public attention reduce the chances of the occurrence of other deaths in similar circumstances to those in which the death occurred.
3rd purpose
To determine whether the public interest would be served by the death being investigated authorities and to refer the death to other authorities if satisfied that the public interest would be served by their investigation.
Suspicious death
If the death is suspicious, freeze the scene and seek further assistance immediately. Do not touch anything
Medical certificate
As to the cause of death is issued by the doctor who was attending the deceased before the death coroner does not have to be advised nor the police involved.
Missing person
Any person who is reported missing to police
AND
whose whereabouts are unknown
AND
there are fears for the safety or concerns for the welfare of that person

When deciding whether genuine fears for the person safety exist consider
