Who is Colonel Charles Gordon and what did he do?
Sent to act as Governor of Sudan on behalf of Khedive Ishma’il. Faced opposition from the Mahdi
What did the Mahdi do?
Transform political movement into a Jihadist army, fuelled by hatred of Brit influence. Defeated a 4,000 egyptian force 1883
What did the Mahdists seek to do?
They wanted to liberate Sudan from outside rule, by 1882 had taken control of area surrounding Khartoum
What happened in 1883?
A joint British-Egypt military expedition under Colonel William Hicks launched a counter-attack against the Mahdists
What were the consequences of the counter-attack?
the brit-egypt forces defending Khartoum were overrun jan 1885
What did Gladstone order Gordon to do?
oversee evacuation of brit and egypt troops from 1884
What did Gordon do instead?
Evacuates 2,500 civillians but stays in sudan to defend city. Troops killed, gordon beheaded. Gladstone doesn’t try much to help. Gladstone named MOG ( murderer of Gordon)
