Substances and properties used in experiments. Flashcards
Pottasium Permanganate Hydrous
Purple coloured, often used in lab experiments. Diffuses in water, becomes anhydrous when heated.
Bromine Vapors
Red Brown, gas
Water
Changes in state, changes states very easily with lesser energy, easily available.
Freezes from top-bottom, due to crystal lattice being less dense than water and having excess empty space.
Is a universal solvent, and thus forms aqueous solutions with many solids. Conducts electricity when ionic salts are dissolved.
Wax
CnH2n+2, can be used for checking states of matter, changes forms with lesser heat.
Iodine
Sublimes, is used to dye leaf boiled in alcohol to check the presence of chrlorophyll.
Sulphur
Sublimes easily at high temparatures, is hence used to achieve extremely high purity of sulphur. Sulphur vapors may remain present in air.
Yellow, Brittle, Active in reactions, can be crystalline or amorphous, displays allotrophy, easily available in laboratory.
Francium
Most metallic character, but decays extremely fast and extremely short half life, is a man-made metal. Should not mention in experiments.
