Are characterized by the continued use of substances despite their causing significant problems in important areas of an individual’s life such as family, school, or work
Substance dependence (addiction)
Using more of the substance than intended
Trying unsuccessfully to stop
Having physical or psychological problems
Experiencing problem at work or with friends
Substance dependence typically involves tolerance or withdrawal
Withdrawal should be mandatory for the diagnosis of substance dependence.
Tolerance
Is indicated by:
Larger doses of the substance being needed to produce the desired effect
Effects of the drug becoming markedly less if the usual amount is taken.
Withdrawal
Refers to the negative physical and psychological effects that develop when a person stops taking the substance or reduces the amount Symptoms include: Sweating Insomnia Rapid heart rate Anxiety Depression Fatigue Irritability Hand tremors Hallucinations Seizures Muscle pains and twitching Vomiting and diarrhea
Substance abuse
For the less serious diagnosis of substance abuse, the person must experience problems such as failure to meet obligations at work or within the family
Use of substance may expose person to physical sanders as in driving while drunk
Social relationships may be strained and legal problems may be frequent
alcohol use disorder
aka alcoholism refers to problematic pattern of alcohol use that leads to significant imparment or distress for at least 12 months
drinking may be problematic if it creates interpersonal difficulties with family and friends or if it leads to a retreat from other activities.
age, family, history and how much or how often an individual drinks are important variables to keep in mind
alcohol use disorder symptoms
drining more or for a longer period than inteded
continally wanting or attempting unsuccessully to cut down or stop drinking
spending alot of time getting alcohol, drining or recovering from its effects
having strong desire or urge to drink
failing to fulfil major work, school or hommme responsibilllities due to drinking
continuing to drink even though it is causing relationship troubles with family or firends
prioritizing drinking by giving up or cutting out imporatnt activities
drinking in situations in which it is physically dangerous
continuing to drink with persistent or recurrent physical or psychologial problem that drinking has likely caused or made worse
needing more than was once needed to get the desired effect from alcohol or experiencing the same effect when drinking the same amount
hving withdrawal or drinking to relieve or avoid such symptoms.
