Substance abuse def.
refers to using legal or illegal substances in the wrong way, generally for its effect on the body
Opiates:
copy brains feel good hormones bringing about a false feeling of happiness
Eg: heroin, morphine, opium
depressants:
AKA downers, slow down messages in brain( reduce emotions + forget problems)
Eg: Alcohol, dagga, solvents
Stimulants:
AKA uppers, speed up messages in brain + heighten senses
Eg: caffeine, nicotine, tik, cocaine, ecstasy
ways in which substances are taken:
- swallowing
- smoking
- snorting
- injecting
important problem-solving skills are:
- decision making
- creative thinking
- critical thinking
Disease def.
an abnormality of the body or mind that most commonly causes pain and discomfit, but can also cause the body to not function properly, leading to distress and death
Chronic disease
must be treated throughout a persons life as it cannot be cured.
Causes of disease
Social factors:
- poverty, social exclusion, poor housing, poor health system
Environmental factors
Economic factors
Lifestyle
- diet, stress, smoking, alcohol, lack of exercise, sun exposure
startergies for living with disease
- think positively
- educate yourself about your condition
- find a doctor and follow their instructions
- take medicine as instructed
- find things to do that you enjoy
- get enough rest
- find a support group
- avoid stressful situations
- eat healthily and exercise regularly
