Substances that people are allowed to buy and consume legally.
What are illegal substances?
Substances that the government does not allow people to have, because they can be dangerous to people’s health.
What is Dagga?
Dagga is:
- Dried leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of the cannabis plant.
- Smoked as a cigarette.
- People feel relaxed.
- Causes heart & lung diseases.
- Men can become infertile.
What is Mandrax?
Mandrax is:
- Tablets.
- Crushed into a powder and smoked with dagga.
- People feel relaxed and happy.
- Then, they feel weak, have stomach pains, vomit, etc.
- SA is the largest user of Mandrax in the world.
What is Ecstacy?
Ecstacy is:
- Sweets with pictures on them.
- Eaten in a tablet.
- People have lots of energy to dance all night.
- Then, they can go into a coma and die.
What is Methamphetamine (Tik)?
Methamphetamine/Tik is:
- Looks like crystals.
- People suffer from intense and very aggressive mood swings.
- Brain damage.
What is Cocaine?
Cocaine is:
- White powder.
- People suffer from depression.
- Cause heart and lung diseases.
- Brain damage.
What is Heroin?
Heroin is:
- Light-brown powder.
- Causes death.

- Stressed = higher risk.
- Depression = high risk.
- Boredom = higher risk.

Factors between two or more people.
Examples:
- Peer pressure.
- Family environment.
- Social and environmental conditions.
Name 5 ways that you can PREVENT substance abuse.
- Implement stircter laws.
- Reduce the number of liquor outlets.
- Educate people.
- Limit the times and days that alcohol can be bought.
- Increses the drinking age from 18 to 21.
