submergent/emergent landforms Flashcards
how are raised beaches formed?
- when the climate gets colder, sea levels decrease as water turns into ice
- as sea levels drop, more coastline is revealed
- original beaches are no longer eroded by waves
- lower part of beach may experience marine erosion and a small cliff may form
what are fjords
submerged glacial valleys
how are fjords formed?
- glaciers eroded below sea level
- when temperatures rose the ice melted and flooded the valley
three submergent landforms
- fjords
- dalmatian coasts
- rias
three emergent landforms
- raised beaches
- relict/fossil cliffs
- marine platforms/terraces
Relict/fossil cliffs
- gently sloping, highly vegetated cliffs
- can often be seen that are no longer reached by the sea
where do dalmatian coasts form?
in areas where valleys are parallel to each other
how are dalmatian coasts formed?
- when the valleys are flooded by sea level rise the tops of the valleys remain above the surface, creating a series of islands
what are raised beaches?
areas of former wave cut platforms and their beaches which are left at a higher level than the current coastline
what is a marine platform/terrace
a rock terrace formed where a sea cliff with a wave-cut-platform above it is raised above sea level
what are rias?
submerged river valleys, the lowest part of the course may be completely submerged while higher land could remain exposed
