this forms the posterior division of the mandibular nerve and loops under the submandibular duct
Lingual Nerve
descends in the neck within the carotid sheath and passes between the superior and middle constrictor muscles then goes to the tongue
glossopharyngeal nerve
this branch supplies the middle ear
tympanic branch
general sensory and special taste to the posterior 3rd of the tongue
lingual branch
sensory to mucous membrane of pharynx, tonsil and soft palate
pharyngeal branch
this runs forward along the lateral surface of the hyoglossus
hypoglossal nerve
main blood supply of the tonsil
tonsillar artery
drainage of lingual vein
internal jugular vein
descends and crosses the lower border of the body of the mandible
facial vein
also called bartholins, rivinus duct
sublingual duct
lies in the floor of the mouth beneath the mucous membrane
sublingual gland
large paired salivary gland, surrounded by a capsule and investing layer of deep cervical fascia
submandibular gland
also called the whartons duct and passes forward along the side of the tongue
submandibular duct
returdes tongue and curls its sides
styloglossus
depresses tongue, pulling its sides inferiorly
hyoglossus
