What ways can you recognize that the subjunctive might be at play in a sentence?
- Verb ends in -e instead of -t and the pronoun “ich” is not in context.
- The verb is “sei; wäre; hätte; würde” in the clause or in a neighboring clause
- There is a thinking/speaking verb or noun introducing the clause or prefacing it
- There is an “if-clause” beginning with “wenn” or “wenn auch”
- The sentence begins with a verb but is not a question.
What person is the subjunctive usually written in?
Third person, but it can be used with “ich” or “er/sie/es/man” and stays in the 3rd.
Sein (man) forms in present, past, sub1, sub 2, and würde:
ist war sei wäre würde sein
Haben (man) forms in present, past, sub1, sub 2, and würde:
hat hatte habe hätte würde haben
Werden (man) forms in present, past, sub1, sub 2, and würde:
wird wurde werde würde würde haben
Weak verb formation in present, past, sub1, sub 2, and würde:
stem + t stem + te stem + e stem + te würde + infinitive
Strong verb formation in present, past, sub1, sub 2, and würde:
stem + t past stem stem + e past stem + ¨+e würde + infinitive
Dürfen in present, past, sub1, sub 2, and würde:
darf durfte dürfe dürfte würde dürfen
Können in present, past, sub1, sub 2, and würde:
kann konnte könne könnte würde können
Mögen in present, past, sub1, sub 2, and würde:
mag mochte möge möchte würde mögen
Müssen in present, past, sub1, sub 2, and würde:
muß mußte müsse müßte würde müssen
Sollen in present, past, sub1, sub 2, and würde:
