What is denotation?
The denotation of a word is it’s direct, literal or specific meaning. Example- ‘ecstatic’ means ‘very happy’.
What is subject specific lexis (also known as jargon)?
Words related specifically to a specific topic or field. Example- laptop, keyboard etc are computing specific lexis.
What are archaisms?
Old-fashioned words. Example- methinks
What is a collocation?
When words naturally sound like they belong together or are often used together. If you say the first word in a pair, people often automatically expect to hear the second word. Example- fish and chips
What is a metonymy?
The reference to an object through a related concept. Example- referring to a king or queen as ‘the crown’
What is a synecdoche?
A reference to a part of something to represent the whole entity. Example- ‘I can’t wait to get back on the waves’ = I can’t wait to get back out on the ocean
What is kairos?
Making people think by referring to time. Example- life was very different one hundred years ago
what is adnomination?
A sequence of words with similar roots. Example- we are going to do this SOMEhow, SOMEway, SOMEhow
What is anadiplosis?
The repetition of a word used at the end of one clause at the start of the following cause. Example- you don’t have to worry. Worry is an unhelpful emotion
What is antonomasia?
The use of nicknames or epithets to refer to people and things. Example- Michael Jackson as “The King of Pop”.
What is hyperbaton?
The deliberate inversion of the normal or expected order of words. Example- ‘this I must see’ instead of ‘I must see this’
What is antimetabole?
A repetition of a phrase but with the word order reversed. Example- “All for one, and one for all”
What is dysphemism?
A deliberately offensive, disagreeable or disparaging word or phrase. Example- shit, fuck, piss
What is hypophora?
A rhetorical question followed by an answer. Example- “What did I tell you? No shoes in the house”
