Background
involve the deeper layers of the skin (dermis, subcutaneous tissue and bone. causative organisms normally live in the soil and enter the body through an injury and stay localised at the site of implantation
2 common types:
mycetoma (eumycetoma) chronic infection of the SC tissue of the foot
Chromoblastomycosis: affects the skin and SC tissue of the limbs. organism is inoculated into the skin by a minor injury.
Signs and Symptoms / Diagnosis
mycetoma:
discharging sinuses filled with organisms
Chromoblastomycosis:
raised crusted lesions
Treatment
mycetoma:
itraconazole and ketoconazole
chromoblastomycosis:
Itraconazole and ketoconazole are used
ALT local heat, cryotherapy or surgery to remove the affected tissue completely will be used.
