Contact Dermatitis Flashcards
Background
Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition that occurs as a result of exposure to an external irritant or allergen.
Allergic version = type 4 (delayed) hypersensitivity reaction. (occurs after sensitization and subsequent re-exposure to a specific allergen/s)
Irritant venison = direct physical or toxic affect on skin. Non immunological inflammatory reaction.
Common Allergens Recent use of a new soap, cosmetic, or shampoo or a new ophthalmic eye drop/ointment.
Common Triggers: Fragrances and preservatives in cosmetics, nickel and thiuram in eyelash curlers and foam makeup sponges or formaldehyde resin in nail polish.
Signs and symptoms/ Diagnosis
Signs and symptoms:
- Periorbital rash of sudden onset, with
- Swelling of the eyelid and
- Thin watery discharge
- Burning, itching, stinging
Diagnosis:
Examine person (SOCRATES)
Patches testing to find cause.
Treatment
Avoiding the allergen.
Cool compresses provide some relief.
Emollient maybe
Oral antihistamine for severe itching may be needed.
Refer if:
Severe, chronic, recurrent
Previously stable
Atypical/ no response to treatment
