Subaerial Processes Flashcards
What is erosion?
The breaking down and transportation of rock fragments.
What are the four main types of erosion?
*remember ‘CASH’
C:orosion
A:ttrition
S:olution
H:ydraulic-action
What is corrosion?
Loose rocks (sediment) are drifted by waves which crashes into cliffs (breaking parts away) and riverbanks (making the river wider).
What is attrition?
Sediments which collide together, getting smaller and smoother until they turn into grit or sand.
What is solution?
Acid contained in the water dissolves less resistant rocks such as limestone.
What is hydraulic action?
The waters current falls into cracks in cliffs or riverbanks that are full of air. This compresses the air so the cracks get bigger.
What is weathering?
The breaking down of rocks but the fragments stay in situ.
What are the three main types of weathering?
*use acronym ‘Peanut Butter Cookies’ 😂
P:hysical weathering
B:iological weathering
C:hemical weathering
What is physical weathering?
Also known as freeze-thaw weathering, physical weathering is where water get trapped in cracks in cliffs or riverbanks. The water will freeze and expand by 9%, and the cracks get bigger.
What is biological weathering?
Animals and plants burrow into the rock, causing it to break up and erode.
What is chemical weathering?
If a rain loud forms in the presence of CO2, acid rain is formed. This, and acid in the river or sea will cause erosion of the riverbank (making it wider) and the cliff.
What is mass movement?
The movement of sediment or material downhill as a result of the force of gravity.
What are the five main types of mass movement?
*use acronym ‘Swiftly Swam Fast Sean Robinson’ 😂
S:liding S:lumping F:lows S:oil-creep R:ock-fall
What is sliding?
A part of a riverbed or cliff will slide down to the bottom.
What is slumping?
A part of a riverbed or cliff will slide halfway down and stay there.
