Sub-section 1: Systems Flashcards
How is the peripheral system spilt into two?
Somatic and Autonomic
What is the endocrine system made up of?
Glands that secrete hormones.
What is the function of the endocrine system?
The endocrine system releases hormones/chemical messengers and regulates cell and organ activity.
Name the 3 types of neuron and how each is structured in terms of axons and dendrites?
Motor:Short dendrites, long axon
Sensory:Long dendrites, short-appearing axon
Relay:Short dendrites, short axon
What is the function of each type of neuron?
Motor: Carry messages away from the brain to muscles and glands
Sensory: Carry messages towards the brain
Relay: Carry messages between neurons
What is excitation?
An increase in the positive charge in the post-synaptic cell making it more likely to fire.
What is inhibition?
An increase in the negative charge, making it less likely to fire.
What is the synapse?
A synapse is the small gap between two neurons, where nerve impulses are relayed by a neurotransmitter from the axon of a presynaptic neuron to the dendrite of a postsynaptic neuron.
On what neuron are the receptor sites?
Postsynaptic neuron
What hormone is released in the fight or flight response?
Adrenaline
