Memory Mission: Sperry’s Research Flashcards
Aim
To find out about hemispheric lateralisation in relation to functions on the left and right sides of the brain.
Procedure
Patients have one eye blind folded and told to focus on fixation point, image then projected to RVF and then the same or different image projected to the LVF.
Findings
If a split picture was shown, they would say they saw one from the RVF and choose the image of the one from the LVF. If shown two different words with various objects, the word shown to LVF would be picked up, image shown to RVF would be said.
If they have an object in each hand, they would find it easy to pick up the one from left hand.
Conclusion
The brain is lateralised.
Evaluation
Advantages: research support, provokes further debate, leads to more knowledge and research
Disadvantages: biased sample, research refuting
