Sub Flashcards
What is it about?
A woman filling in for men in historic movements
‘skipped the team bath with the lads, sipped my champagne in the solitary shower’
Female mensuration stops them from joining in celebrations
Marginalized
Excluded
‘Nursing the precious egg’
Asyndetic listing
Euphemism- constant links to sexual actives
Rugby- fast pace, can’t stop
‘bounce in my moon suit over the dust’
Mocking the ease of the job
Highlights how women should be able to go to the moon- never been done, possible critic
The moon is generally linked to femininity so could be an attempt to reclaim for all females by burring things she likes
‘I felt the first kick of my child; whacked a century into the crowd’
Diminishes the importance of motherhood
Waste of time- ‘5 months gone’
Pursing a career is something she is more interested in
‘What I think to myself is this:’
Cliffhanger
Women have been voiceless in the past
Makes a reader think what they have learnt
Context
Duffy uses herstory
Use bathos where there are anti-climaxes through the humor and mocking

Stella and Blanche are excluded from the poker game meaning they lose part of the house which is meant to be the women’s sphere as it’s a male sport
Stella is nursing a baby throughout the play but lacks any mention apart from when Stanley lets it slip, Stella enters labour (subdued), diminishes the importance of motherhood like in the poem.
Blanche and Stella fail to reclaim the house as theirs at the poker nights continue often ending in violence or some form of an outburst
Blanche’s future is left unclear and Stella’s life with the abusive Stanley and new child is unclear- question the longevity and family dynamics
