Main idea
the overall or central message the author wants to convey or get across.
Context clues
Context clues are hints in the surrounding text that a reader can use to infer the meaning of an unfamiliar word.
Poetry
a literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; they are a genre of literature.
Plot
Elements:Exposition: where the story takes place and who is in the story
Conflict: internal or external problem that shows a struggle between 2 opposing forces and drives a story
Rising Action: events that further complicate the conflict and lead to the main event or climax
Climax: high point or most suspenseful part in a story
Falling Action: winding down or calming down of action in a story
Resolution: ties up loose ends; everything wrapped up; end of story
Summarizing
short account of the central ideas of a text. NOT the place for opinions, background knowledge, or personal information.
Authors Purpose
the main reason he or she has for writing a selection. Usually, an author’s purpose is to entertain, inform, or persuade.
Text Features
include all the components of a story or article that are not the main body of the text. These include the table of contents, index, glossary, headings, bold words, sidebars, pictures and captions, and labeled diagrams.
Theme
a universal idea, lesson, or message explored throughout a work of literature. Themes are complete sentences, like “Money can’t buy happiness” or “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Theme is bigger than the story; it will express the big picture, apply to the real world, and give real world advice.
Supporting arguments
When you support your argument or opinion in a persuasive essay, you give examples or evidence to back up your thesis statement. Supporting evidence can be from a credible source or it can be an anecdotal, personal example. If your argument is not supported, people are less likely to agree with you.
Inferencing
a conclusion reached on the bases of evidence and reasoning. It is a conclusion or opinion that is formed because of known facts or evidence from a text
Greek and Latin roots
Many of our words are formed from Greek and Latin words. It’s helpful to know the definitions of Greek and Latin roots to help us figure out the meaning of English words which use those roots.
Pronouns
words that replace nouns. (she, they, I, you)
CLauses
a group of words that contains a subject and a verb that have a relationship
Sam Danced gracefully (Main clause) even with a back injury (subordinate clause)
Transitions
words used to link together different ideas in your text.
