Studying language development Flashcards
Basic Research
Focus on developing and refining the existing knowledge base about language, or developing new theories on language development
- aka theoretical research
Applied Research
focus on the application of basic research to clinical and practice based settings
Speech perception
researches how variables of speech perception impact language learning
- can use MRI & fMRI, event related potential, eye tracking, sucking response tracking, or head turn preference protocol
language production
researches expression/use of language domains
- may include language tests, language therapy approaches, and observational and experimental methods: video recording/audio taping of naturalistic language use, and language testing (with or without interventions)
Language Comprehension
researches the variables impacting understanding language
- consider linguistic development with eye tracking and visual fixation for pre-linguistic children, and pointing and showing for linguistic children
