Study Session 7 Flashcards
Visual runway markings
Designation marking - runway identifiers Centerline marking (dashed)
Non precision airport runway markings
Designation markings
Centerline
Threshold markings (beginning of runway)
-either 8 stripes or number of stripes corresponding to the width of runway)
Aiming point marker ( ~1000 ft from landing threshold)
Precision instrument runway
Same as non precision
Touchdown zone marker (provide 500 ft distance increments)
Destination or directional signs
Arrow points to direction of taxing route to destination
Yellow background with black lettering and arrows
Location signs
Identify taxiway aircraft is currently on
Black background and yellow letters
Holding lines
Pilots can’t cross without ATC clearance
Painted across width of taxiway and yellow
Holding position sign
Runway intersects
Red with white lettering
Departure leg
Traffic pattern that is a straight course leading from takeoff runway
Crosswind leg
Horizontally perpendicular to the takeoff runway
Make a 90 tune from upwind leg
Downwind leg
Parallel to runway but in the opposite direction to intended landing direction
Base leg
Transitional part between downwind and final approach
Final approach
Descending starting at completion of base till touchdown
Entering traffic pattern
Enter 45 degrees to the downwind leg at the midpoint of the runway
Leaving traffic pattern
ATC will approve direction or depart straight out or at a 45 degree turn after reaching altitude
Chart supplements
Depict data not readily depicted in graphic form such as airport sketches, NAVAIDs, communications data, weather sources, airspace, special notices, VFR waypoints, operational procedures, etc…
Published every 56 days
Contains aeronautical chart bulletin - provides major changes in aeronautical information
Runway numbers and letters
Numbers indicate the magnetic direction of the runway ( runway 20 = 200 degrees)
Letters differentiate parallel runways (L = left, R = right, C = center)
Runway threshold bar
Marks beginning of runways when threshold was displaced or relocated
Demarcation bar
Separates displaced runway from taxiway or another area (yellow thick line)
Light beacons
Green and white rotating beacon in a class D airspace during the day indicates that the weather is NOT VFR (vis less than 3 sm and ceiling less than 1000 ft)
Military will have 2 white flashes between one green flash
Traffic pattern
1000 ft above airport elevation
Direction of flow is to the left unless otherwise indicated
Upwind leg
Side-step departure leg like in the case of an aborted landing
Sectional chart symbology
Airports Additional airport information Airport data Radio aids to navigation/communication Airport traffic/airspace info Obstructions Topographic information Miscellaneous (hang gliders, flags, parachute)
What is the straight dashed magenta line with degrees on it
It’s a magnetic zone
Magnetic variation/isogonic line where magnetic declination is constant
