Study Of Life Flashcards
Biology is?
The study of life.
What does cell theory mean?
This is the principle that all living things are made up of cells and all cells come from pre existing cells.
What does gene theory mean?
This is the principle that all living things have DNA, molecule which code the structures and functions of cells and get passed to offspring.
What is homeostasis?
All living organisms maintain a state of balance that enables organisms to survive in their environment.
What is evolution?
Living things can change to have traits that allow them to survive better in their environments. Random mutations allow natural selection, higher rates of survival, passed on to their offspring.
What are the three domains?
- Bacteria.
- Archaea.
- Eukarya.
What is a phylogenetic tree?
A diagram that represents evolutionary relationships among organisms. They are hypotheses, not definitive facts.
Characteristics of natural science?
- Subject to change.
- Based on the observation of the environment.
- Based on the formulation of theories.
- Inferences are made from observations.
What is the meaning of scientific method?
A logical problem solving approach.
Gain knowledge through making questions and observations, experimenting, formulating and testing a hypothesis.
Steps of scientific method?
- Observation.
- Question.
- Hypothesis (Answer the question).
- Prediction.
- Experiment.
- Result.
A control group represents?
Standard conditions.
What is a theory?
Well developed set of ideas that propose and explanation for an observed phenomena. Can be used to predict future observations.
What is a hypothesis?
A testable prediction.
What is inductive reasoning?
A general conclusion is drawn from a number of observations.
What is deductive reasoning?
Uses a general principle to predict the outcome of an experiment.
