study guide for term exam (11.11.24) Flashcards
what is natural capital?
recourses that can provide a sustainable natural income of goods and services (ex. fresh water, oil)
what is natural income?
the yield from the recourses we have from natural capital
what is bioaccumulation?
the build up of persistent/non biodegradable pollutants within an organism or trophic level because they cannot be broken down
what is biomagnification?
the increase in concentration of persistent/non biodegradable pollutants along a food chain
what is a species?
a group of organisms sharing common characteristics that interbreed and produce fertile offspring
what is a habitat?
the environment in which a species normally lives
what is a niche?
the particular set of abiotic and biotic conditions and recourses in which a species could survive and reproduce
what is a population?
a group of organisms of the same species living in the same area at the same time, and which are capable of interbreeding
what are abiotic factors?
the non-living, physical factors that influence the organisms and ecosystem (ex. temperature, sunlight, pH)
what are biotic factors?
the interactions between the organisms (ex. predation, herbivory, parasitism)
what is carrying capacity?
refers to the number of organisms-size of population that an area or ecosystem can support sustainably over a long period of time
what is an S curve?
A pattern of growth in which, in a new environment, the population density of an organism increases slowly initially, in a positive acceleration phase; then increases rapidly before slowing down as the carrying capacity is reached.
what is a J curve?
growth is initially slow but becomes increasingly rapid, and does not slow down as population increases.
what is an ecosystem?
a community and the physical environment it interacts with
what is a community?
a group of populations living and interacting with each other in a common habitat
