Study Guide Comp 1 Flashcards
How will the body respond to MRSA if entered from a wound?
The wound will be painful, reddened, swollen, and warm to the touch.
How will the body respond to MRSA if entered through the mouth?
The patient could develop pneumonia if the bacteria travels to the lungs.
How will the body respond to MRSA if it enters the bloodstream?
It can cause infections to organs, and also cause sepsis.
How will the body respond to Malaria?
Symptoms will present as flulike with fever.
Shaking chills, headache, muscle aches, and malaise. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may also occur.
Due to destruction of red blood cells, Malaria can also cause anemia and jaundice.
How will the body respond to a skin staph infection?
Skin infections can look like pimples or boils. They may be red, swollen, and painful.
Sometimes there is pus or other drainage.
They can turn into impetigo, which turns into a crust on the skin, or cellulitis, a swollen, red area of skin that feels hot.
How will the body respond to a bone staph infection?
Bone infections can cause pain, swelling, warmth, and redness in the infected area.
You may also have chills and a fever.
How will the body respond to a staph infection that enters the bloodstream and then travels to the heart?
Some flu-like symptoms: fever, chills, and fatigue.
It also causes symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, and fluid buildup in your arms or legs.
How will the body respond to a staph bacteria entering the digestive system?
Food poisoning typically causes nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, and a fever.
If you lose too many fluids, you may also become dehydrated.
How will the body respond to staph bacteria entering the lungs?
Symptoms include a high fever, chills, and cough that doesn’t get better.
You may also have chest pain and shortness of breath.
How will the body respond to staph bacteria entering the lymphatic system?
High fever, sudden low blood pressure, vomiting, diarrhea, and confusion.
You may have a sunburn-like rash somewhere on your body.
TSS can lead to organ failure.
What is a benign tumor?
A benign tumor is one that no matter how big or small is no longer growing. Non cancerous.
What is a malignant tumor?
One that spreads to other cells, tissues, and parts of the body through the bloodstream or lymphatic system. It is considered cancerous.
What is non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma?
Instead of being caused by impaired T cell function (Hodgekins), Non-Hodgekins is a malignant form of lymphoma.
It is more severe and results in more deaths.
Describe the process of metastasis and what body system it takes place in:
A multi-step process encompassing the
(i) local infiltration of tumor cells into the adjacent tissue, (ii) transendothelial migration of cancer cells into vessels known as intravasation,
(iii) survival in the circulatory system,
(iv) extravasation and
(v) subsequent proliferation in competent organs leading to colonization [1].
It takes place in the circulatory and lymph systems.
What is near drowning?
A situation where a person generally aspirates fluid or may have an obstructed airway caused by a spasm of the larynx when gasping underwater.
