Study Guide Cells Test Flashcards
Compare and Contrast diffusion and active transport.
Diffusion is a process where particles tend to move from an area where they are more concentrated to an area where they are less concentrated. Active transport is the opposite, sometimes cells must move the opposite direction against a concentration difference. Active transport requires energy whereas diffusion does not. Both of these processes have the goal of moving particles to one area of concentration to the other.
Describe the structure and the function of the cell wall and cell membrane.
The cell membrane regulates what enters and leaves the cell and also provides protection and support. The cell membrane has a lipid bilayer. This lipid bilayer gives the cell membrane a flexible structure that forms a strong barrier between the cell and its membrane.
The main function of the cell wall is to provide support and protection for the cell. They are outside the membrane, and most cells wallows are porous enough to allow water, oxygen, etc in.
List and describe the vacuole, cytoskeleton, Golgi apparatus, and ribosome.
Ribosome is a small particle of RNA and protein that produces protein following instruction from nucleus.
Golgi apparatus is the stack of membranes in which enzymes attach carbohydrates and lipids to proteins.
Vacuole is a saclike structure that stores materials.
Cytoskeleton is a network of protein filaments that helps the cell to maintain its shape it is also involved in movement.
What do prokaryotes lack?
Nucleus, dozens of structures and internal membrane.
What is the magnification of electron microscope?
1000 times more detailed than light.
Which organelles is found in a plant cell and not in an animal cell?
Chloroplast
What is a type of active transport that allows cells to take in liquids?
Pinocytosis
What structures are found inside all cytoplasm?
All organelles
What structures carry out cell movement?
Cytoskeleton, microfilaments, microtubules
What organisms would have a cell wall?
Plants algae, funk and many prokaryotes
Why does diffusion occur?
Because molecules are always moving and colliding.
What is diffusion?
Process where particles tend to move from an area of high concentration to an area where they are less concentrated.
Why would an animal cell burst if it is surrounded by fresh water?
Water would move into the cell.
What is a group of tissues called?
An organ
List three examples of tissue cells in our body.
Muscles, nervous, and connective tissues.
