A

The bo staff was originally used by Okinawan commoners. It was easily disguisable as a pole for carrying buckets of water. All you would have to do would be slide the buckets off and you were instantly armed. The use of the bo eventually worked its way into a martial art called kobudo which originated in the 16th century. Today it is more commonly used in shows and tournaments. Bos today are traditionally made out of lightweight, flashy materials for tournaments and shows, instead of the original bamboo or wood.
