Study cards 2 Flashcards
Active surviellance (prevention therapies and close monitoring) is based on three concepts, they are:
- Treatment of disease may only be needed if there is disease progression
- Caries progression has diminished over recent decades
- Majority of proximal lesions, even in dentin, are not cavitated
Adolescent patient is recognized as having distinct needs due to 10 factors:
Potentiall high caries rate Increased risk for traumatic injury Tendency for poor nutritional habits Increased esthetic desire and awareness Complexity of combined ortho and restorative care Dental phobia Potential use of tobacco, alchohol, and other drugs Pregnancy Eating disorders unique social and psychological needs
Adolescents are broadly defined as
Individuals from 10-18 years old
Category A drugs?
Have been studied in humans and have evidence supporting safe use

MS- strep mutans
What is discouraged during during teething due to potential toxicity?
Topical anesthetics, including OTC teething gels
What is positive youth development?
An approach that goes beyond traditional prevention, intervention, and treatment of risky behaviors and suggests that a strong interpersonal relationship between the adolescent and the pediatric dentist can be influential in improving adolescent oral health and the transition to adult care.
What is the primary goal of perinatal oral health?
