Study Aim Flashcards
What are the types of dementia they look at
Frontotemporal dementia semantic dementia and Alzheimer’s
What is frontotemporal dementia caused by
Related to progressive focal atrophy in the frontal or anterior (or both) temporal lobes
Typical behaviours of frontotemporal dementia patients
Disinhibition (disregard for social convention ie lose “little voice” in head
Loss of insight (can’t recognise change in personality or behaviour)
Poor self care
What causes semantic dementia
Variant of frontotemporal dementia
Characterised by loss in semantic memory (facts/general knowledge) both verbal and non verbal
What is Alzheimer’s
Progressive deterioration of network connection between nerve cells in the brain
Leads to death of nerve cells and brain tissue
Leads to severe memory loss as tend to have early damage in hippocampus
What was ikeda et al looking for
Differences between frontotemporal, semantic and Alzheimer’s in changes in appetite, food preference, eating habits, swallowing behaviours and miscellaneous oral behaviours
Main aims of the study
Investigate way to better identify/distinguish the three forms of dementia
Investigate if there is a specific sequence in which changes occur
Establish if the diseases can be characterised specifically through eating behaviours
Title of the study
