Eosinophilic Esophagitis (What, Triggers, S&S)

A
  • What: rare, chronic disease where body reacts to antigen (autoimmune antigen-mediated) ⇒ inflammation of tissues that line esophagus
  • Triggers: milk, egg, wheat, soy, pollen, etc.
  • S&S:
    • Atopic manifestations
    • Dysplasia
    • Exudate
    • Edema
    • Retrosternal and abdomen pain
    • NV
    • Globus sensation
    • Decreased appetite

Fibromyalgia (What, Causes, S&S)

A
  • What: chronic, rheumatic disorder that causes widespread pain and tenderness in muscles and soft tissues of body
  • Cause: unknown but believed that CNS dysfunction thought to play role
  • S&S:
    • Sensitivity to stimuli
    • Tenderness upon palpation on tender points
    • Neurologic: pain, tingling,, dizziness, headache, brain fog
    • Overall body: fatigue, sleep disorder, changes in weight
    • Musculoskeletal: muscle stiffness and weakness
    • GI: IBS and nausea
    • Psychological: anxiety, irritability, low mood

Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia) (What, Causes, S&S)

A
  • What: mild but long term form of depression
  • Causes: similar to Major Depressive Disorder
    • Physical difference in brain
    • Difference in brain chemistry
    • Inherited genes from primary relatives
    • Traumatic events
    • Poverty and lack of education
  • S&S:
    • Increase/Decrease in weight and appetite
    • Lack of sleep
    • Fatigue
    • Low self-esteem
    • Hopelessness
    • Worthlessness

Ischemic Stroke (What, Causes, S&S)

A
  • What: loss of blood flow ⇒ loss of tissue perfusion to brain
    • Disruption in blood flow to brain
    • Most common stroke
  • Causes: blood clot or atherosclerotic plaque that partially/completely occludes artery to brain
    • # 1 cause is atherosclerosis !
    • Athehrombotic (most common): blood clot originating from arteries of brain from dislodged atherosclerotic plaque that’s thrombogenic
  • S&S:
    • Sudden numbness and weakness (unilaterally)
    • Confusion and Aphasia (don’t understand what you’re saying or slurred speech)
    • Vision Issues
    • Ataxia, dizziness, loss of balance
    • Severe and sudden headache
    • TIA: transient ischemic stroke
    • Sxs are location dependent
