Structures and organization of respiration 16.2 Flashcards
What is pulmonary ventilation?
The flow of air between the atmosphere and the lungs, occurs due to difference in air pressure
What is the main muscle of inhalation and exhalation?
Diaphragm
What shape does the diaphragm take when it is contracted?
It flattens as it contract
What % of air is brought into the lungs via the diaphragm?
75%
Define exhalation:
Exhalation occurs due to elastic recoil of the chest wall and lungs
-During exhalation alveoli and airways don’t completely collapse due to this recoil effect and presence of surfactant
What are the muscles of exhalation
internal intercostal external oblique Internal Oblique Transverse abdominis Rectus Abdominis
When inhaling air, is the alveolar pressure lower or higher?
The pressure in the alveoli decreases
When exhaling, is the alveolar pressure increased or decreased?
The pressure is increased
When is lung pressure the same as the atmospheric pressure?
At rest just before inhalation
