Structures Flashcards
Epidermal tissues structure
Covered in with waxy cuticle
Why is the epidermis waxy
Helps reduce water loss by evaporation
The upper epidermis ?
It’s transparent
Why is the upper epidermis transparent
So that light can pass through it to the palisade layer
What does the palisade layer have a lot of
Chloroplasts
Why does the palisade layer have a lot of chloroplasts
As they are near the top of the leaf where most of the light is to photosynthesise
What do the xylem and the phloem form
A network of vascular bundles
What do the xylem and phloem do
Deliver water and nitrates to entire leaf and take away glucose produced by photosynthesis
What do the xylem and the phloem help do
Support the structure
What are the tissues adapted for
Gas exchange
What is the lower epidermis full of
Little holes called stomata
What do the stomata help do
Let CO.2 diffuse directly into the leaf
What is the opening and closing of the stomata caused by
Guard cells in response to environmental conditions
What are the air spaces in spongy mesophyll for
To increase the rate of diffusion of gases
