Q

types of forces

A
  1. compression
  2. tension
  3. bending
    • beam , both sides supported (eg, book shelves )
    • cantilever , only one side supported (eg, lamp post)
  4. torsion
  5. shear

Q

reinforcing structures

A
  1. triangulation
    • created and used to provide strength and rigidity to the structure
    • gives the crane strength to remain upright and support the loads
  2. trusses
    • have triangular parts to provide strength and rigidity
    • often used for supporting roof and bridges

Q

other methods of reinforcing structures

A
  1. stiffened folds
    - eg trays with edges folded to add rigidity
  2. lamination
    - placing layers of thin sheet materials and joining them together
    - thin sheet materials can be made stronger by lamination
  3. honeycomb
    - strong in compression yet very light
  4. gusset plates
    - used for adding strength and supporting the joint
    - increases area of joint and distributes the stress more evenly
  5. ribs
    - acts as a stiffeners
    - used to add strength to walls and prevent them from caving in
  6. braces
    - add strength and support to a structure
  7. webs
    - add strength and support to structure
