structure of viruses Flashcards
Why are viruses not living organisms?
- They do not possess the 9 characteristics of living things
- They do not consist of cells
How do viruses work on living organisms?
They infect living cells (host cells) and direct these cells to manufacture more virus particles. Viruses obtain nourishment from these host cells
What is the type of nucleic acid in a virus?
Either RNA or DNA, not both
What is the capsid in a virus for?
It is a protein coat that either surrounds the nucleic acid or encloses it to protect the genetic material inside it
What is the lipid envelope for in a virus?
Some viruses have an additional phospholipid membrane, derived from the host cell it infects, while some accquire it while budding off from their host cell. It helps to serve as additional protection for the cell
What are the spike proteins in a virus?
They are glycoproteins on the lipid envelope. They help penetrate host cells and cause infection
