What is the cornea

A

Transparent coat over front of eye

Joints to form sclera = opaque

Q

What is cornea layers

A
Epithelium
- Regenerates fast so if scratch will fix in a few days
Bowman's basement membrane
Stroma - regular collagen
Desment
Endothelium

6
Q

Does cornea have blood vessel

A

No vessels in storma layer to maintain transparency

Makes corneal graft successful

8
Q

What is behind endothelium

A

AH
Provides nutrition as no blood vessels
Also nutrition via tear film and sclera

Where is the iris

A

Between lens and cornea

Hangs from sclera

Q

What is the ciliary body

A

Behind iris

Suspends the lens via ciliary ligaments

Q

LOOK AT PHOTO

17
Q

What are the layers of the retina an function

A

Pigment epithelial layer sits on top of choroid
Layer of rod and cones - photoreceptors
Nerve fibre
Inner layer

Retina is responsible for converting light -> neurological signal via photoreceptor cells

18
Q

What supplies retina

A

Outer layers = choroid

Inner = central retinal artery - branch of ICA

19
Q

What are barriers in the eye

A

Blood aqueous

Blood retinal - prevents capillaries from choroid entering retina

20
Q

What is anterior segment of eye

A

Infront of lens
Anterior chamber - in front of iris
Posterior - behind iris where AH is produced

21
Q

What is posterior segment of the eye

A

Behind lens

Contains VH

22
Q

What is AH produced from and how does it flow

A

Ciliary body
Flows into posterior chamber of anterior segment
Flows through pupil into anterir
Travels through trabeculae meshwork
Drains into Schlemm’s canal at cornea sclera junction
Drains out of eye at angle of anterior chamber into episcleral veins

23
Q

What is upper and lower eyelid made up of

A

Skin
Muscle
Connective tissue
Mucous membrane

24
Q

What does skin contain

A

Hair follicles

Sebaceous glands which can get blocked

25
Q

What muscles

A

LPS - opens
Orbicularis oculi - closes
Meconium gland - oil

26
Q

What does mucous membrane do

A

Secretes conjunctiva which liners eyelid and sclera

NOT cornea

27
Q

What is lacrimal apparatus

A

Tears come from lacrimal gland
Coat conjunctivae
Drain out of medial eye into lacrimal duct
Join into nasolacrimal duct

28
Q

What stimulates lacrimal apparatus

A

Parasympathetic from facial

29
Q

What is function of tear film

A

Keep cornea moist
Wash away foreign body
Ab to kill microbes

30
Q

What are 3 layers

A

Mucous - conjunctivae
Aquesous - lacrimal gland
Oil - meconium gland

31
Q

Importance of lens

A

Avascular so transparent

Can’t shed old fibres so at risk of opacification
