Structure of the Earth: volcanoes structure Flashcards
What is a volcano?
A volcano is an opening in the earth’s surface where molten material erupts and solidifies as lava.
Where do volcanoes usually occur?
Constructive and destructive plate boundaries.
What are the 4 parts of a volcano?
The main vent, magma chamber, crater and parasitic cone.
What is the main vent?
The main vent is a pipe up the middle of the volcano.
What is the magma chamber?
The magma chamber is the source of the molten rock.
What is the crater?
The crater is a depression at the top of the vent.
What is the parasitic cone?
The parasitic cone is a secondary opening on the side of the volcano.
Name the 3 states of a volcano?
Active, dormant and extinct.
Approximately how many volcanoes are still considered potentially active today?
1500
Name the 2 types of volcano.
Shield volcano and composite volcano
Describe the type fo lava, shape and location(where it is normally found) of each type of volcano.
Shield vocano: - Bigger and wider than composite. -Runny lava -Usually found at constructive boundaries. Composite volcano: - Taller and thinner than shield -Thick lava -Usually found at destructive boundaries.
