Structure of the Earth: volcano hazards Flashcards
Name 6 different volcanic hazards.
Pyroclastic flow, lava flow, lahar, acid rain, gas and ash
What is pyroclastic flow?
Pyroclastic flow is a mixture of burning hot rock, ash and gas running down the side of a volcano at 200mph.
What is lava flow?
Lava flow is liquid rock which flows out of a volcano and destroys everything in it’s path.
What is lahar?
Lahar is a type of mudflow made from ash, rock and water.
What is acid rain?
Acid rain is when gases emitted by the volcano react with rain water which(when it rains)kills vegetation and pollutes waters.
What is gas?
Gases such as carbon and sulphur dioxide emitted by the volcano are deadly to most humans and animals.
What is ash?
Ash is tiny bits of glass rock and minerals less than 2mm in size emitted by the volcano.
