Structure Of The Earth Flashcards

1
Q

The restless earth

A

The earths crust and upper mantle consists of plates which are constantly moving by convention currents and so you get earthquakes volcanoes and mountains where plates meet
Alfred Wegener continental drift 1915 developed into theory of plate tectonics.

Q

Earths atmosphere in the past

A
Earth formed 4.5 billion years ago
At first had volcanoes
And then as the earth cooled down water vapour condensed to form oceans
Then bacteria algae and plants evolved
which released oxygen

Q

Life on Earth

A

Plants producing oxygen evolved from plankton and Algae from the ancient oceans but we don’t know how the molecules of simple living things formed

Q

Gases in the atmosphere

A

Plants took up much of the carbon dioxide animals ate the plants and the carbon ended up in plant and animal remains as sedimentary rock and fossil fuels

Q

Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

A

Carbon Dioxide moves into and out of the atmosphere due to plants, animals, the oceans and rocks. The carbon cycle shows this process. The amount of carbon dioxide has risen due to burning of fossil fuels.
