Atoms, Elements and Compounds Flashcards
What is atomic structure?
Nucleus contains protons and neutrons protons = positive charge neutrons = no charge. Atomic number = number of protons in the nucleus of its atoms.
Explain the arrangement of electrons in atoms.
Each electron in an atom is an energy level. These are represented as shells drawn as circles in a diagram. Electrons are shown by X. Electrons in the lowest energy level are in the shell closest to the nucleus.
How do you form bonds?
When different elements combine they form compounds. Compounds of metals bonded to non metals have ionic bonds.
Explain chemical equations.
Atoms get rearranged in chemical reactions, we write equations to represent these reactions which should be balanced.
What are atoms, elements and compounds?
100 different elements - periodic table list. Each element one type of atom. Atoms represented by symbols, e.g Na = an atom of sodium O= Oxygen. Periodic table in groups with similar properties. Atoms have a tiny nucleus surrounded by electrons. Compound = 2 or more elements.
