Structure of the Atom Flashcards
1
Q
What is an isotope?
A
An isotope of an element has the same atomic number but different mass number
2
Q
How does an isotope change in the number of protons and electrons?
A
Same number of protons but different number of neutrons
3
Q
What are ions?
A
Charged atoms
4
Q
What happens when ions gain electrons?
A
They become negative ions
5
Q
What happens when ions lose electrons
A
They become positive ions (cat ions)
6
Q
What is Rutherford’s experiment?
A
- an alpha source is fired at a gold leaf
- the alpha source is expected to go straight through
- occasionally some alpha particles bounce back
- conclusion: that the centre must have a small dense ball of protons and neutrons with the atom being mainly empty space
